New accessible bungalows underway in Thurmaston
We’re delighted to see work beginning on a new development of nine bungalows designed for older people and people with mobility issues. The original St Michael’s Court, located on Melton Road in Thurmaston, was originally built over 50 years ago and consisted of primarily bedsits with shared bathrooms, so no longer met the needs of older residents and had become difficult to let.
Pelham were appointed by Charnwood Borough Council who will own and manage the bungalows, to initially look at options for the site and then design the scheme. We’re redeveloping the sheltered housing complex to create modern, accessible homes that better serve the community in collaboration with Ark Consultants and Mercers Building Solutions. The first phase of this £2 million investment project will involve the demolition of the existing buildings, scheduled to begin in late February. The development is expected to be completed by early 2026.
Simon Henderson, Architect at Pelham, said:
”Designing these new bungalows for Charnwood Borough Council has been a rewarding opportunity to create high-quality, accessible homes that truly meet the needs of older residents. This development is about more than just housing, it’s about providing a safe, comfortable, and supportive environment where people can maintain their independence and quality of life. We’re proud to be part of this transformative project and look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on the community.”
We look forward to sharing updates as the project progresses.
