100 planning applications for NCHA’s retrofit programme
Our architectural team has been working with Nottingham Community Housing Association (NCHA) to secure planning permission for enhancing the insulation on residents' homes. We’ve just reached a big milestone; planning approved for over 100 applications.
For each application, the focus has been on fabric-first energy improvement strategies , including external wall insulation with a brick or render finish, often new windows, upgraded loft insulation and improved ventilation systems.
Simon Henderson, Senior Architect said: "We were delighted to work with NCHA's Retrofit team on the planning process required to deliver this project. The external wall insulation planning application was a complex piece of work across ten different local authority planning areas.
"There have been a wide variety of homes, many Victorian, but some as new as the 1950’s. Affordable warmth is such an important requirement for residents, so we were keen to help speed up the process."
In 2023, NCHA successfully obtained funding from the BEIS Social Decarbonisation Housing Fund (SDHF). They highlighted residential homes with an energy efficiency rating below 'EPC band C', aiming to make these homes warmer while using less energy. This initiative provided at no cost to residents has the potential to generate substantial energy savings.
Greg Watson, Operational Manager – Projects at NCHA commented: “Simon, Barbara and Darron at Pelham have been an incredible support to us throughout this project. We don’t know what we would have done without them and look forward to improving many more as we continue to invest.”
